About the Site

What It Is For

The website Mentions of Hong Kong Universities (MHKU) has a simple and clear theme: what the rest of the world is saying about Hong Kong universities and their people.

Hong Kong has eight universities. It is quite frequently that local media and newspapers report on what is happening in these universities. While local media mentions of them are frequent and abundant, how about a worldwide mentions? Are there any people in the rest of the world mentioning about Hong Kong universities? What are they saying, why do they interest, and what are their viewpoints and opinions?

The target readership of this website is people of Hong Kong universities including students and teachers. However, if you are also interested in knowing more about Hong Kong universities from a different perspective, I hope this website would not disappoint you.

Who Build It

The website MHKU is built by an individual named Steven Choy (that is me!) I spared around 20 hours in my spare time (and sleep time) to build this site before its launch day on November 16, 2005. To build the initial shape of this website, I first installed its infrastructure and the publishing platform, then worked out its main theme and style, and wrote some posts to fill it up with some content that can reflect the theme of this website. Thereafter, I will spare around 2 hours per week to maintain the content and usefulness of this site.

Why Build It

Reason One: I am among the people of Hong Kong universities. Besides reading local news about the University I am currently with and other Hong Kong universities, I am also interested in what non-local media is saying about us recently.

Reason Two: I want to have a real website to demonstrate some emerging Web technologies and useful Web services. I also want to use it to test the power of individual in the big wave of open source and Web publishing.

How It Is Built

This website is built with the uses of the following technologies and web services.

I use this page to track and discover news. You are welcome to check the most recent news before I have time to capture them.
