UML Tools: What is your favorite?

14 October 2005 | Teaching, To Students | 24 Comments

In our previous practical session, we have tried three professional UML tools. Do you mind tell us what is your favorite among them after your initial evaluation. Put your opinion on your weblog and let us know the URL to your post.

To Software Engineering students:

In our previous practical session, we have tried two professional UML tools–Poseidon for UML Community Edition and Omondo EclipseUML Free Edition–to draw some simple UML diagrams. You are also encouraged to try Visual Paradigm for UML Community Edition in your spare time. These three professional UML tools were all developed by large companies that are specialized in UML modeling software. You can read this post of my personal weblog about the details of them.

Do you mind tell us what is your favorite among them after your initial evaluation? What are your rationale and criteria that lead to your selection? Have you tried or heard of other UML tool that you consider it better than the three suggested products.

Put your opinion on your weblog and let us know the URL to your post. Thank for your participation and contribution to this course so far.

    Hello, Pro. Steven,

Please find my weblog for my opinion of UML tools. In addition, would you please register as the Basic Academic Partner in VP site (link for details) that to take a license for VP standard Version (I think that will have more functions than Community Version) for us?? I had browsed the page that standard version is Free of Charge but only school lectuers/Professors can register to get lincense. Thanks for your kind attention to my request.

The “Poseidon for UML Community Edition.” is easy to use at all… just the assocation is hard to correct… as the result by the PC133, the Microsoft Vision 2003 is also can bulid up the UML, but why we need to learn new? why dont we use old…..!!

I think in concept… we need to think clear.. and then we can work easy… if we just know for a half, we will pay so many time to understand what we are doing….@

but if we know how to do very clear….we can do it at any situation od software… and I think.. we can do it and Microsoft Word at all.. haha… Am I right?

Because Our Blog “UNTITLE” is down suddenly, therefore I just write in here.

I think my favorite UML tool would be Poseidon for UML Community Edition, it is because:

    1) It is more easily to install campared with others (When I install Omondo EclipseUML Free Edition which need to
    install a plug-in).

    2) Its user interface is quite colourful and clear.

    3) It is pretty user-friendly due to the fact that the tool bar is so simple and the description is so enough that we will know how to create different diagrams.

P.S In the past, I used a UML tool which is called “Dia”. After I used the UML tool steven gave me, I find that “Dia” is not so professional.

I think the Poseidon for UML Community Edition is easy to use, because I have been used before when I was studying in IVE. But sometimes the association is difficult to delete and control.

And It is easy to install compare with Omondo ElcipseUML which installing in the Lab.

Visual Paradigm for UML Community Edition is also easy to use than the Poseidon for UML community edition. Its have a demonstration on the website. Let’s me clearly know the skill to use it . And it is user-friendly and easy to use.

    Hi Steven,

In my opinion, I’m recommand that the ” Poseidon for UML Community Edition “, because it is very useful and powerful tool for UML modelling, the interface also a good design, it can easy to find every functions you want to use. But sometimes, you will find this tool have a big problem in controlling the association with another object.

I’m also highly recommand the other one “Visual Paradigm for UML Community Edition “, this is great tools for speed up your UML modelling, because this software has a wonderful interface arrangement (user-friendly),you can learn it all at the short time and this software will make you everything under your control, it will not be any problem in controlling the association with another object.

“Omondo EclipseUML Free Edition”, this tool has a big problem in difficult to install!! If compare with another two modelling tools(easy to use, funtions, interface design…..), I will not use this tool!
