Why do software projects fail so often?
13 March 2006 | Teaching, To Students | 22 Comments
Why do software projects fail? What can we do to make them succeed? What is the importance of software project management?
To Software Engineering students:
Large and complex projects such as construction of highway bridges or construction of aircraft are usually delivered on time and within budget. However, big software projects are often not.
Search the Web, do a little reading, and write some short paragraphs to describe some key reasons why software projects fail so often. Also try to express your opinions on how to address them. What do you think about the importance of software project management in this aspect?

Projects fail because of mis-management. But not always. They typically fail in environments where management is not listening hard to the people constructing the software. If you look at very complex software projects like, e.g. Eclipse, IDEA, OpenOffice etc.. they have a different kind of delivery schedule which allows them to use test driven development and apply the Agile manifesto. When good people are carrying out this practice, your software can be of high quality AND on time.
